Alan Colio

I have worked as a full-time hardware engineer since 2012 and had been working part-time hardware engineer intern since 2008. Using my skills of hardware engineering, I oversee the client's product complete life-cycle from planning to manufacture to meet and exceed their expectations.

Experience

Hardware Engineer, 2012 - Present

Palomar Scientific Instruments

Palomar Scientific Instrument is a consulting company focusing on developing specialized scientific instrument with a focus on data acquisition.

  • Develop DSP simulations using Xilinx System Generator.
  • Develop custom DSP and/or data acquisition solutions for FPGAs using Xilinx Design Tools and Matlab or LabView FPGA.
  • Use high-speed development boards such Xilinx's KC705 and ZCU102 to demonstrate proof-of-concept DSP solutions.
  • Use National Instruments FPGA modules for FlexRIO with digitizers modules to meet end user hardware requirements.
  • Integrate third-party FMC cards with high speed ADCs and DACs into solutions for quick product development.
  • Schematic capture, PCB layout, and Gerber generation using Altium Designer of custom boards for both high and low speeds applications.
  • Develop testing and troubleshooting procedures for new products.
  • Test products before being shipped out.
  • Use a combination of C/C++, MatLab, Tcl/Tk, I2C to develop firmware for microprocessors.
  • Responsible for the product's complete life-cycle from statements of work to product delivery.
  • Use C/C++ within the Qt environment to develop software for graphical or terminal end-user interaction.
  • Create PNP cad files, operate Stencil machine, PNP, and PCB oven to fully assemble designed boards.
  • Test assembled PCB and rework any issues that occurred during the assembly process.

Associate Applications Engineer, May 2010 - Nov 2010

Altium Limited

Altium Limited provides competing EDA software for electrical engineers. My main duties were to provided support to not only to customers of the EDA tool, but also to assist Applications Engineers in their day-to-day duties, such as:

  • Troubleshoot various issues of the tool by phone and/or interactive desktop sharing tools.
  • Answer quick "How-To" type questions regarding schematic design and/or PCB layout portion of the tool.
  • Use cloud database to find previously resolved cases in order to help with new cases.
  • Maintain a well documented history of all my interactions with customers regarding their case.
