使命
一位勇者對素昧平生的陌生人仗義相助，點燃了國際特赦組織全球運動的星星之火。1961年，葡萄牙兩名學生因「為自由舉杯」而被逮捕並判刑七年。英國律師Peter Benenson在「觀察者」報中刊登了一篇「被遺忘的囚犯」，大聲疾呼世人關注人權議題並應挺身而出，以行動改變現狀。Peter Benenson隨即展開「1961請求特赦」運動，蒐集世界各地良心犯的資訊並且廣為宣傳。自此開啟了國際特赦組織五十年來全球運動的序章。
自此之後，國際特赦組織迅速茁壯，也愈來愈多分會誕生於不同的國家。國際秘書處(International Secretariat) 也於同年設立於倫敦，現今國際秘書處的職掌包括研究調查各國的人權狀況，以及協調跨國間分會的合作等各項工作。
成立至今五十餘年來，國際特赦組織以有七百萬名會員、支持者及行動者分布於一百五十多個國家，分會也遍及全球八十餘國。
