About the Role

Search is a critical part of various user journeys in Carousell. Buyers use it for high intent listing discovery and category browsing, while sellers take advantage of its ranking algorithm to increase the visibility of their inventory.

We are always improving our new search platform that powers most of these flows and our challenge is that it needs to cater to tens of millions of users and billions of listings. Isn't it exciting? How can you participate? We're looking for a talented search engineer willing to make a huge impact in a fast growing company, leader in SouthEast Asia. Come and join our Engineering Team based in TW!

You will:

• Collaborate and innovate closely with colleagues from various teams and functions (Product, Data Science, Data Engineering) to deliver the quickest, most relevant and reliable search API, algorithm and experience across all search journeys for tens of millions of users every month.
• Devise, test, evaluate and iterate on all areas of search – from query understanding, ranking algorithms to recommendation, seller diversity, filters and personalization.
• Build and design scalable and reliable microservices.
• Work with the infrastructure team on deploying, scaling and performance optimization.
• Participate in code reviews to maintain a high-quality code culture.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot incident and site issues with modern performance monitoring tools.

You have:

• Experience in Go or similar languages, gRPC, RESTful APIs.
• Ability to write clean, maintainable and performant code making use of appropriate design principles and design patterns.
• Experience in using and developing on Elasticsearch or similar search engines.
• Experience in technologies such as Redis, Kafka.
• Experience in building large, scalable distributed systems with a good understanding of microservices architecture, Kubernetes, containers and associated principles.
• Experience in optimizing the performance of backend systems and scaling infrastructure components.
• Experience in using observability, monitoring, alerting and logging tools such as Kibana, Grafana and Prometheus.
• Able to direct the overall design and code architecture for codebases that you and your team works on and constantly works to improve it. Able to write style guidelines for your team to follow.
• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or other equivalent degrees/experience.
• 3+ years experience in software development.

Good to have:

• Experience with database systems, with knowledge of SQL and NoSQL stores (e.g. Cassandra, PostgreSQL, etc.)
• Experience with scripting programming languages such as Python.
• Experience with TDD/BDD and agile methodologies.
• Experience with online classifieds marketplace.
• Experience with search / data engineering technologies
• Knowledge of managing data consistency in distributed systems.
• Experience working with asynchronous systems.
