In 1872, Shiseido opened its doors in Ginza, Tokyo. 1872年，曾在日本海軍擔任藥劑師的福原有信，在銀座開設全日本第一家西式藥房，並取名為資生堂。資生堂的名字源自中國易經：至哉坤元，萬物資生，乃順承天的概念。意思是從孕育萬物的大地發現生命之美，並不斷地追求新的價值創造。

1957年台灣資生堂成立，成為二戰後海外市場的第一個正式據點，之後並同步導入日本的連鎖店制度、在台設廠，就此在台灣將美容保養的觀念進一步推展開來，目前為台灣化粧品市場佔有率最高之企業集團。
