Dalvin Butler 

Secondary Teacher and Doctoral Candidate

A secondary teacher for the Hawaii Department of Education, Dalvin Butler designs lesson plans with an emphasis on individualized instruction for all student performance levels. Employing John Dewey's "learning by doing" philosophy, Dalvin Butler implemented project-based learning in the classroom as a means of increasing student engagement. Outside of his responsibilities in the classroom, he serves as a Hawaii State Elections committee member and Hawaii Young Professional Educators liaison for the Hawaii State Teachers Association. 


A Gates Millennium Scholar, Dalvin Butler earned a bachelor's degree in government from Georgetown University. He completed his master’s degree in educational studies at Johns Hopkins University and is a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education, where he plans to publish his dissertation on the best education practices for multilingual learners. 


In the past, Dalvin Butler served as an administrative intern for Oakland Mayor Ronald V. Dellums and a legal intern to Jeffrey Demain at the Altshuler Berzon practice. He also spent four months as a legislative aide to Bay Area Rapid Transit Director Carole Ward Allen. In 2012, he represented Ralph Nader's Democracy is for the People campaign as the recipient of the Fannie Lou Hamer fellowship.
