David Colin Burke

Makena Capital Founder and Former CEO

A California-based financial executive with more than two decades of private equity and venture capital experience, David Colin Burke is the former CEO and managing director of Makena Capital Management, LLC, where he also served as a board member. In 2005, he founded the investment management firm and oversaw its expansion into a global enterprise with 18 partners and offices in California, New York, and London. The firm now has more than 400 clients with a combined $20 billion in assets under management. In addition, David Colin Burke has served on the corporate and advisory boards of more than two dozen venture capital and private equity firms worldwide, including the Virginia Investment Management Company and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Prior to launching Makena Capital Management, David Colin Burke served for two years as the managing director of the Stanford Management Company, where he oversaw investments in venture capital and private equity on behalf of Stanford University's endowment fund. He has additional experience in this regard as the managing director of The Investment Fund for Foundations. Earlier in his career, he worked as an associate at Linklaters and at the law firm of Bingham McCutchen (which later became known as McCutchen, Doyle, Brown, and Enersen) in San Francisco.

Mr. Burke recently completed the Stanford Executive Program at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Previously, he graduated with a master's degree in international relations, a juris doctor, and a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Virginia (UVA). He leverages his education and professional experiences to teach the World of Investing and International Relations course at UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce.
