John Hathaway of Maine - Skilled in Teamwork and Leadership

An award-winning small business owner in Maine, John Hathaway serves as the President and CEO of Shucks Maine Lobster. He started his path in entrepreneurship more than 50 years ago when he opened a Kool-Aid stand as a seven year old. He's been working ever since. As a student at Phillips Exeter Academy, where he developed a taste for leadership and strong teamwork as the co-captain of the varsity football team and a member of the Varsity Basketball and Baseball teams, he worked as a waiter and a dishwasher in the school dining hall. He also served as a member of the Visiting Fellows Committee which hosted many well known guests such as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. In the summers, he held several jobs including golf caddy, raking blueberries, working in the local ice cream stand, and working on construction sites.

John Hathaway continued developing such skills as an undergraduate at Tufts University and law student at Suffolk University Law School. At the former institution, he studied English and History, while also playing on both the varsity baseball and football teams. Meanwhile, at the latter institution, he helped lead the ABA/Law Student Division as the national Vice President. During those years, he held a variety of bar and restaurant jobs during the school year, as well as gaining attention as the premier ticket scalper during the Celtics, Red Sox and Bruins championship seasons.

The skills Mr. Hathaway developed through his schooling played an important role in leading his national award winning real estate Wilds Boys Land & Cattle Company as founder and owner. Through this business, he designed and built different developments in fast-growing markets. In 2006, he established Shucks Maine Lobster and has overseen the company’s adoption of innovative technology and international award winning products. His business was the first Maine lobster processor to use HPP technology in the United States.
