Kandy Steel's Education and Achievement Gap Reduction Success

Kandy Steel has over 25 years of experience in education. She received a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Missouri in 1984 and later earned her master of arts in educational administration from the University of Phoenix. While working as a principal at Denver, Colorado's Prairie Middle School, Kandy Steel received a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

The following year, the Colorado Principal Center honored Kandy Steel with the Wright Way Award for Principal of the Year. During her 11-year tenure as principal of the school, Prairie Middle was recognized by the Colorado Association of Middle Level Educators as a National School to Watch, and for three consecutive years, the school received recognition for closing the achievement gap between students of different backgrounds.

Upon leaving Prairie Middle School, Kandy Steel served four years as a deputy superintendent for Colorado’s Adams County District 14, where she again helped close the academic achievement gap through culturally responsive initiatives. She currently works as a university mentor for the University of Northern Colorado's Center for Urban Education as well as a self-employed state and national educational consultant.
