David Hastings Eckerd College Professor

David Hastings Eckerd College Professor studies the chemistry of the ocean and the sea. In 2000, he moved to the shores of Tampa Bay to teach at Eckerd College. He taught marine science, environmental science, and chemistry. David Hastings began this journey by studying chemistry at Princeton University. He got his Ph.D. in chemical oceanography from the University of Washington. Paleoclimatology, the study of how climate changed in the past, as shown by ocean sediments, is his main area of research interest. David Hastings also looks into how the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has affected the ocean's sediments and tiny pieces of plastic. David Hastings thinks it's essential for scientists to discuss policy with the public and elected officials. He also thinks it's important for Florida to take action to lessen the worst effects. Scientists are apprehensive about the future of our planet, and David Hastings explains why this is so from a scientific point of view. David Hastings stopped teaching at Eckerd College, a small liberal arts school in St. Petersburg, Florida when he retired. He likes to sing, hike, swim, canoe, and kayak. Homemade lemon sorbet is his favorite treat.
