During his doctoral studies, James Ron's expertise extended to consulting for the International Committee of the Red Cross, a Swiss-based agency championing the Fourth Geneva Convention, also known as the "laws of war." He evaluated their collaborative efforts with civilian and prisoner-protection agencies during the Bosnian and Croatian civil wars. Subsequently, he lent his insights to CARE-USA, a humanitarian agency, to assess the human rights implications of their aid to refugees in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide in Congo. Following the completion of his doctorate, he held prestigious academic positions at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, McGill University, Carleton University, and the University of Minnesota. His dedication to studying political violence took him to diverse global destinations, where he conducted research for Human Rights Watch and pursued academic inquiries. In 2005, James embraced statistical methods to delve into the determinants of international NGOs and media coverage of human rights issues. In 2012, he embarked on a series of face-to-face opinion surveys across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, meticulously tracking and analyzing public attitudes toward human rights. His subsequent research ventured into exploring the potential for citizen donations to human rights organizations in Mexico and Colombia, employing innovative methods, including cash experiments. His commitment to humanitarian causes extended beyond research and academia. Since 2010, he has selflessly volunteered for Life for a Child, an Australia-based charity providing vital medical supplies to over 18,000 children with Type 1 diabetes in low and middle-income countries. His motivation stems from a personal connection, as his son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the tender age of two. In 2013, James Ron co-founded Open Global Rights, an influential online platform fostering multilingual conversations about human rights strategies, research, funding, and their real-world impact. The platform's success was underscored by substantial support from esteemed foundations, including the Ford Foundation and Open Society Foundations. He dedicated four years of his life as the website's lead editor. Throughout his remarkable journey, he maintained a steadfast association with Human Rights Watch since 1992. He conducted rights-related research across various countries and produced reports that pushed the boundaries of innovative research methods. In 2018, he collaborated with colleagues and Human Rights Watch to conduct a comprehensive survey of the attitudes of the US public toward human and civil rights, both at home and abroad. Dr. James's unwavering commitment to advancing human rights, his multidimensional approach spanning academia, advocacy, and humanitarianism, serves as a beacon of inspiration for us all.

In India, as project co-leader, helped design, oversee and evaluate a low-cost medical intervention for 200 children.
