Lucy Bowditch

Professor of Art History @ The College of Saint Rose
Lucy Bowditch serves as a full professor of art history at the College of Saint Rose. A faculty member at this Albany, New York, institution since 1995, she focuses on teaching courses in modern art, contemporary art, and the history of photography, as well as leading an experiential art course in New York City. Dr. Bowditch brings to her teaching an eclectic approach, one in which she frequently emphasizes to her students the social history of art. Beyond her responsibilities as an educator, Professor Bowditch is a published researcher with a particular interest in the history of photography and 19th-century art. She has written numerous articles that have appeared in general and peer-reviewed outlets including Art Criticism, the Photo Review, and Afterimage: the Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism. Her interest in 19th-century art extends to the fashion and clothing of the time, particularly in light of Gustave Courbet. Additionally, Dr. Bowditch maintains expertise in 19th- and 20th-century photographers including Edward Steichen. Lucy Bowditch holds a PhD in art history from the University of Chicago, where her dissertation focused on Steichen. Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, she graduated with honors from Bowdoin College in Maine with a BA in art history.
