This formed part of my master’s project and I had a lot of success in doing this project at Stellenbosch University under supervision of Prof. MJ Kamper.

In doing a lot of research into wind turbines and mechanical enginering, as an electrical engineer I designed a machine that removes high frequency vibrations that occur on the shaft or rotor of a wind turbine. In doing so, it prolonges the life span of the generator and gearrbox in the system, resultng in overall savings and efficiency.

The couplings were designed and evaluated using mathematical multi objective models and were programmed into python to excecute. The models then produced a pareto curve that was then analysed and impacted design choices. The design was then evaluated by building a physical model in a laboratory test set up.

This product also gained some traction and seed funding to develop it.

I spent time developing various parts of coding curriculum for students at Skyrock projects, most of the projects were either Javascript, Python or Block Coding, while also doing planning and structuring of all the tech curriculum in the School.

I also set up some open source rebranded sites hosted on google cloud for Skyrock students to access: Skyrock Blockly, Skyrock Pixel Art, P5

The startup did spend a lot of time trying to find a product market fit, so we experimented with a lot of different technologies and I have built over 20 lessons from a range of thechnologies, drone coding, game design, art, coding, etc.

Curriculum Development

Hoog is a remote grow box that consists of three parts, an internet connected box with a plant inside, an IoT cloud management server and a web app to view and control the box. The box applicationn is for growing food indoors and to be made availible to people to monitor the status of the plants inside the box.

The box itself consits of a raspberry pi device, electronic sensors ( temperature, humidity, soil moisture, airflow, fans, COB lights and a camera), which can all be controlled through API calls to the server running on the Raspberry Pi.

The IoT management server is set up on Balena.io and is used to create a cluster of devices to the network. The server generates an unique ID that exposes the API endpoints on the individual devices.

The React app is an interface that is used to connect to the box and IoT servers. The app collects data from the boxes and stores the data inside a firebase Database, and recalls it on a graph to show sennsor data over time. The light and watering schedule of the boxes can also be set on the app which takes care of the plant depending on the various types of plants.

Hoog App

Shape was a project i did while working for Rehive, a blockchain platform.

Its primary function was to issue users blockchain reward tokens that was created on the Stellar cryptocurrency. This project was built in Django on the backend, and had frontend app that was built using React.

This project also formed part of the Stellar build challenge and got an honourable mention.

The projectc does not exist on its own anymore, but is part of the Rehive ecosystem and value offering.

Shape App

This project I built for the company I worked for to find a way to better manage the classes, students, parents and teachers. The backend is built on Django and python and allows for the scheduling of classes, tracking hours, payments and much more.

It is primarily a business tool for the school and is based on internal processes and systems and is custom built based on the needs of the school. The app also runs rabbitMQ and sends daily email reminders to teachers to complete certain tasks on thee app.

The second phase was to branch out the parent side of the app so parents can log in and view the classes of their students.

Skyrock App

This project I did as part of a team of students where we put up a small down wind turbine to test the hypothesis of wind turbines without a tail and moves into the wind through the blade design.

The wind turbine was set up and successfully generated power after implementation. The design of the turbine and generator was part of research work that I completed at the University of Stellenbosch.

I have over three years of work experience as an backend software developer
with critical skills in business processes, software infrastructure and project
management. With a background in Electrical and Mechanical engineering
research I am able to apply myself in various technical roles in industry and have
published academic work in IEEE Industry Applications Journal. I have worked in
many start-up environments and understand how to build systems following
lean, agile development and possess excellent business and interpersonal
communication skills as I have taught programming and hosted technical
workshops and hackathons

The thesis includes analytical FEM analysis, design optimization using machine learning and comprehensive
simulation data analysis as well as manufacturing and practical testing.

Completed undergraduate degree in robotics and renewable energy. and did a nal year project under
supervision of Prof. M.J. Kamper in wind turbine grid connection, research was published at a conference in
South Africa.
