Dr. Melissa McNamara trained at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida. She received postgraduate training in Internal Medicine via residency work at Kaiser Oakland, followed by a Rheumatology fellowship with the University of California, Los Angeles.


Melissa McNamara, MD, serves as a volunteer member in association with the Arthritis Foundation. Committed to providing support to a number of charitable and civic activities, Dr. McNamara has presented at Lupus Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation, and is a supporter of the annual Northern California Arthritis Walk.


Dr. Melissa McNamara integrates the practices of Funtional Medicine into her daily work with patients. Her work in this realm focuses on healing the intestinal environment which is now known to be a key player in the development and propagation of autoimmune disease. She also uses probiotics along with standard treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, as studies have shown that it leads to decreased disease activity. As a part of her standard autoimmune workup, she also investigates the roles of toxic burden, such as blood mercury and heavy metal levels, checks for candida overgrowth, and tests for the MTHFR gene mutation.
