Philip Li

UX Designer

I've dived into user experience in the internet industry for 6 years, and I regard myself as a lifetime worker in humanities and social sciences. Finding cause and effect from qualitative data, and finding patterns from quantitative data is my area of expertise. However, I also believe the key to success for advocating good design relies on more than just data, but also building up one’s persuasiveness and authoritativeness in the field.

Years of working with software development teams has given me a good understanding of how to co-work with PMs, UI Designers and R&D Engineers in a mutually comfortable way. I have also had ample experience in the process of agile development. This has made me an advocate of rapid iteration in product validation.

Product Design Proposition

  • Collaborated with PMs & UI Designers to implement product optimizations, including but not limited to planning usability testing, defining and analyzing key indicators, hosting cross-functional workshops, proposing optimization plans, tracking development progress and metrics.
  • Products I've participated in proposing include an app for finding restaurants, a control panel upgrade for our blogging platform, an O2O restaurant reservation service, and an interest-based social app, etc.
  • In the case of the blog control panel upgrade, I proposed 41 optimization items, of which 20 were revised, and which resulted in successfully increasing the usage rate of our new version by 24% after optimization, allowing the company to carry out its long-time goal of deprecating its legacy control panel.
  • Created user flows and wireframes for a data platform application as envisioned by the product owner and our operations team, and engaged in rapidly iterating discussions with the product owner, operations and developers.

User Experience Research

  • Clarified research goals from requesting departments, planning and performing interviews or usability tests, etc., and proposing optimization plans.
  • User segments I've conducted research on include bloggers, food article readers, open-shelf makeup buyers, college-aged Instagram users, and digital life of teenagers, etc.
  • Conducted our weekly Project User Day, with a goal of receiving timely feedbacks from potential users of our products in the early stage, creating opportunities for our development teams to meet users face-to-face and empathize with users, as well as tracking follow-up items.
  • Interview observation participation rates for personnel from other departments rose up to 400% after Project User Day.

Agile Development Project Workflow

  • Took on the role of a Scrum Master, and led 3 separate product teams through their transformation into agile teams separately. Each team completed at least 3 months of weekly or bi-weekly sprints and released at least 10 deliverables under my guidance before handing off to successive scrum masters.
  • Helped teams create proper user stories, assisted the PO in value prioritization, removed obstacles for team members, and facilitated team self-management and self-growth.

User Research and Service Design

  • Performed some heuristic evaluations with team members for the development of a photo-sharing app.
  • Implemented usability tests before release to the market, and prioritized optimization items.
  • Interviewed potential users for a traveling service, created early-stage Personas, and conducted concept validation with lo-fi prototypes to assess its value.

Agile Development Project Workflow

  • Participated in the process of Kanban/Scrum for our app development project.  Designed and performed test cases with cross-functional team members.
