Phillip Kapraun

A Pioneer in Equine Orthopaedic Treatment

As owner of Harvard Equine Practice in Harvard, Illinois, Dr. Phillip Kapraun builds on more than 32 years of experience in treating standardbred and other performance horses. His practice focuses on the diagnosis of lamenesses and the treatment of these conditions using precise joint injections. Dr. Phillip Kapraun stands out as a leader in the use of Cobroxin treatments for soft tissue pain in horses and has played a key role in the introduction of honeybee venom in treatment of navicular disease, a condition of the horse's front feet.

Dr. Phillip Kapraun was instrumental in the standardization of the evaluation and removal of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) in yearling horses. Working with Drs. Hilliker and Kline of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Kapraun conducted in-depth research into the effect of OCD lesions in standardbred horses and found that horses with lesions had fewer starts and lower earnings at 2 and 3 years of age. He began recommending the removal of OCD lesions at the yearling stage, before the horse begins training, and this practice has since developed into a common practice among equine veterinarians.
