Le Guin's Speak Like a Human is a sci-fi anthology that explores, through short fiction, the point at which human nature becomes inhuman. In the beginning of the book we are introduced to a series of characters that have all had their speech modified by the use of technology. The lengths these characters go to in order to remain human (the anthology contains a range of acceptable/unacceptable boundaries for people's speech) and the deeper repercussions of their conversations are explored throughout the book. As the title implies the stories are all told through fictional characters who have their speech altered to convey their'story'. This gives readers the chance to see how it could affect our perceptions of others, and vice versa, and is an interesting introduction into how a character's motives may be a reflection of who they are. The characters in the book are all from different backgrounds with different technological alterations, and for the most part it shows a very unique perspective into how the technology was being used by each character. In one story we meet a female pilot who we are introduced to as, 'one of those girls'. This is a male protagonist, and once she starts her speech alteration the reader is able to see how he is different in his presence to those around him. It takes a bit of time for the reader to see this change but the way that they do is interesting, as is their reaction to it. The reader is left to imagine how this character would be altered in the real world. We also have a woman who has been chosen to speak to a machine that is able to predict the crimes that will be committed in the near future. This prediction takes the form of a fictional report of the crime, with all the crimes that are predicted narrated in the same sentence, and this includes a personal attack on the victim. It is a very unsettling introduction to the future for the reader and is a great example of how technology may shape society in a different way than we think. The readership is not the only audience this book explores; it also explores how it could be interpreted by the developers and programme designers who use the technology. In a futuristic setting we are introduced to three men who are taking part in an experiment to see how people would interact with a character that used speech modification technology. This gives readers a glimpse of how the technology could be used to help those who are speech disabled,
