So please, let’s not speculate, but have at it! How many of you watch sports? I don’t mean college basketball, football, baseball, etc. I mean the really big time sports, like the Olympics. Do you watch that? I’m sorry, but in a country as big as ours, I couldn’t possibly keep track of every sport that exists. So I asked a friend who is a sports nut. Here is what he told me: “In this country, we have over 1500 different sports.” Oh! I think I get it. We have hundreds of sports teams. Well, okay, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but I’ll get into that later. So it makes sense that there would be so many different sports, but who do the winners get? There are 5 major sports championships: 1. The World Cup: The most popular sport in the world. It’s the most popular soccer game ever. And, as expected, we win this! 2. The World Series: Baseball is the second most popular sport in the world, so we get first place again. 3. The Stanley Cup: Hockey is a little less popular, so we only get third place. 4. The Olympics: This is very complicated. There are over 200 different sports in the Olympics. The sport that wins the most medals is golf. It’s not even close. Golf wins by a landslide. 5. The NBA: Basketball is actually very popular. A lot of people play it and a lot of people watch it. We get second place. But what about all of these sports teams that exist? Who wins all of these sports championships? This is where things get even more complicated. I told my friend that in my opinion, the national teams have the right to be awarded the most medals. The reason I say that is because we have something called “team points” that decides this. The national team with the most points wins the championship. Let me explain.
