Thursday, April 10, 2009 We're Out! As some of you may already know, we've been out of paid work for the last several weeks. I don't know why we have to give 30 days notice before quitting, but we had to give notice and that's how we did it. It has been a roller coaster ride of fun but ultimately tragic for our family. The day after we told our colleagues, we left with neither a job nor any money in our pockets. We both knew that we were going to need the next 2-3 weeks to pull ourselves out of the hole we were in and we started to talk about jobs. The last thing we wanted to do was let our situation get even worse by borrowing more money to pay the rent. As a result, I think that we've done a pretty good job at walking away from the financial problems. At least for now. As soon as we started to look for jobs, we found ourselves in a rather ironic situation. Most people were looking for jobs, but no one seemed to want to hire us. To me, this was sort of the "proof" that I was always trying to get across in the last post. I was going to be a guitar player in a rock band (if you read that post, then you probably know what that means) and my wife was going to be a graphic artist (if you read that post, then you probably know that one too). I was always saying that it would be a stretch for us to get jobs with our experience, but now that I actually needed a job, I couldn't get one. Even worse than that was that I had to tell our landlord that we would be leaving sooner than expected and that we would not be paying the rent in the coming month. The worst part of it was that I had a copy of the Business section on my desk at work, which had an ad for a "customer service representative." I picked up the phone and tried to call the number that was listed, but there was no answer. I figured that I'd have to wait a few days and then try again. That's when I decided to call the number listed in the Job Postings. There was an answer on the first ring. Now I had a job!
