Cincinnati, OH, USA
Craig Hockenberry Receives Honorary Doctorate from Mount St. Joseph A long time educator and a resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, Craig Hockenberry earned his master’s in education administration from Xavier University before starting his career in the Ohio public schools. Craig Hockenberry has been recognized for his achievements and was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio. After being bestowed this honor Dr. Hockenberry then delivered the commencement address at the university. The award is given annually to someone who blazes a remarkable path in their career and represents the core values of the institution. Craig Hockenberry was the principal of Oyler School, Superintendent of Manchester Local, and the Superintendent of Three Rivers over his 27 year career. He hopes to continue his leadership throughout the region in education and work to grow his leadership skills. His most impactful work has been in the urban core of Cincinnati, but he has extensive experience in rural and suburban regions. After receiving his honorary degree Craig Hockenberry was the star of an award winning documentary, Oyler; One School One Year. The film was produced by Amy Scott who is a reporter for Marketplace on National Public Radio (NPR). Craig was also awarded the Principal of the Year in Cincinnati Public Schools which is given in memory of James N. Jacobs. There are a number of honorary degrees given out by schools every year for many reasons, and the doctorate of humane letters is normally reserved for recognizing philanthropic work and work in the humanities. Typically, a humane letters degree is given to someone at a commencement ceremony, and the person receiving the degree will give the commencement speech. This is done to show that this degree is the highest honor of the ceremony, as it is at the end. The term humane letters are normally used when referring to classic liberal arts such as literature and history. Honorary doctorates of humane letters were first given at Oxford and Cambridge in the 15th and 16th centuries. Some schools do not give out honorary degrees, including prestigious institutions such as MIT. Craig Hockenberry continues to speak as a guest lecture and at civic organizations across the region.
