But even the best of intentions, he says, should not equate to carrying a mission abroad. “I just wish we didn’t have troops abroad,” De Vito said during a recent visit to his family’s place in Long Branch, New Jersey, about 20 miles south of where he grew up. “It’s horrible to leave. I had a great time and I’ve had a great life. But I just think we could’ve done that with different means.” De Vito says he is a fan of President Obama’s decision to pull out all troops from Iraq. But he’s ready to celebrate the drawdown of a war that still had not ended as the troop withdrawal was being announced last month. “I didn’t think we should leave there at all,” said De Vito, who served with the Marines in Afghanistan and will be discharged next week. Obama announced that he would end the war in Iraq, which began more than eight years ago, after he saw the results of a ground troop withdrawal that he had ordered in 2009. The war was first launched to topple Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and then continued after the U.S. invaded following the 9/11 attacks. “He’s doing a great job,” De Vito said of the president. “It’
