Contents History Development The origins of the Black Hawk can be traced to an open-cockpit Sikorsky S-43 (S-43) helicopter design by the company's chief engineer Chester E. The production line was shut down when the Sikorsky Aircraft Division went bankrupt in 1965. The assets of Sikorsky were purchased by Hughes Tool Company, the aircraft was renamed Black Hawk. The first production helicopter was made in July 1967.[6] Despite its troubled history, the Black Hawk was a success in the tactical role. The military version was the most widely used helicopter for a wide variety of missions.[7] The improved model, the S-76, was first flown in 1970. In February 1971, The Air Force awarded Sikorsky a contract to upgrade the Black Hawk with an advanced flight control system. The result was the Black Hawk AH-1G SuperCobra.
