It is used by the U.S. military, its allies, and for law enforcement and search and rescue missions. Its armament is two 25 mm M240A1 Gatling machine guns and two general purpose machine guns, a Mk. 38 Mod. 0 Colt Commando and a M249 SAW. A pair of side-mounted folding-hatch doors allow passengers to load or unload cargo. The Blackhawks are operated by the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and several other military aviation commands and are maintained by their respective aviation maintenance commands. Contents History Development The origins of the Black Hawk can be traced to an open-cockpit Sikorsky S-43 (S-43) helicopter design by the company's chief engineer Chester E. Flower, who was looking for a new helicopter to serve as a training aircraft.[1] In the late 1950s, the S-43 was modified to meet an Army Aviation Systems Command requirement for a four-engined, twin-rotor tactical transport helicopter.[2] Sikorsky's chief designer, Sidney Shalett, was charged with the task of designing the new aircraft.[3] The S-43's basic design concept was used for the design of the new helicopter. It was decided to build the new aircraft with four main units: the main rotor, tail rotor, empennage and fuselage.[4] The prototype XH-16 first flew on August 4, 1962.[5] However, the helicopter program was suspended before it entered production. The production line was shut down when the Sikorsky Aircraft Division went bankrupt in 1965. The assets of Sikorsky were purchased by Hughes Tool Company, the aircraft was renamed Black Hawk. The first production helicopter was made in July 1967.[6] Despite its troubled history, the Black Hawk was a success in the tactical role. The military version was the most widely used helicopter for a wide variety of missions.[7] The improved model, the S-76, was first flown in 1970. In February 1971, The Air Force awarded Sikorsky a contract to upgrade the Black Hawk with an advanced flight control system. The result was the Black Hawk AH-1G SuperCobra. The first production AH-1G arrived in May 1973, but the AH-1G was not issued in production quantities until after Sikorsky's merger
