More specifically, this invention relates to the inhibition of the development of varicose veins in the subcutaneous tissues of animals through topical application of a novel composition comprising quinacrine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle. The formation of varicose veins is the result of the swelling and elongation of the veins. This swelling and elongation is due to venous valvular incompetence and an increase in the diameter of the deep venous system. The occlusion of varicose veins is commonly treated with surgery or the injection of sclerosing agents such as tantalum microspheres and pneumatic balloons. A simple and non-invasive method for treating varicose veins is by sclerosing the veins with a variety of chemical agents. It has been shown that the chemical agents useful for sclerosing varicose veins can be formulated in an aqueous solution. Several of these aqueous solutions have been introduced into varicose veins either by injection or by oral administration. However, the most common method of delivering the sclerosing solution is by injection. Although, these aqueous solutions are effective, they often cause irritation to the surrounding tissues of the vein. These irritating side effects often cause the patient to discontinue the therapy. Additionally, the penetration of these aqueous solutions into the deep veins and trunk of the body is limited. Therefore, the aqueous solutions only have limited sclerosing effectiveness. Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a non-toxic, non-irritating topical sclerosing composition for the treatment of varicose veins. It is another object of this invention to provide a topical sclerosing composition which will effectively penetrate the tissue surrounding the vein without causing skin irritation. It is yet another object of this invention to provide a topical sclerosing composition which is useful for the treatment of varicose veins in humans and animals. It is a further object of this invention to provide a topical sclerosing composition which is stable to the storage of the composition. It is yet a further object of this invention to provide a topical sclerosing composition which will effectively penetrate the tissue surrounding the vein.
