Magnetic encoders are widely used for position detecting equipment and for speed and distance measuring equipment. There are basically two types of magnetic encoders: one type senses magnetic field changes caused by a permanent magnet, and the other type senses the changes caused by electromagnets. The present invention is concerned with magnetic encoders of the second type. Magnetic encoders sense the magnetic field changes of a permanent magnet caused by movement of the movable member to which the permanent magnet is attached. The movable member is moved relative to the permanent magnet such that the magnetic field of the permanent magnet changes. The relative movement is converted into an electrical signal indicative of the position of the movable member. For example, Japanese Published Unexamined Patent Application No. 55-164765 discloses a magnetic encoder which employs a plurality of permanent magnets disposed on a rotary member to determine the rotational position of the rotary member. The magnetic field caused by the permanent magnets is detected with a magnetic sensor, and the magnetic field detection signal is converted into a digital signal. A CPU determines the rotational position of the rotary member based on the digital signal. FIGS. 2A and 2B are block diagrams of an example of the magnetic encoder of the type to which the present invention pertains. FIG. 2A shows the magnetic encoder with a rotary shaft 2 which is rotated by a mechanical means. The rotary shaft 2 is provided with a permanent magnet 2a for detecting the rotational position of the rotary shaft 2. The permanent magnet 2a is disposed adjacent to a magnetic sensor 4 having a detection axis 4a. The magnetic sensor 4 is a Hall IC. An optical encoder 6 is attached to the rotary shaft 2 and is provided with a light emitter 6a for irradiating a light beam to an optical grating 6b attached to the rotary shaft 2.
