Pacific Rim is a 2013 science fiction monster-vs-monster film, loosely based on the short story "The Monster from the Ocean Floor" by American writer Ray Bradbury. It was written and directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film tells the story of a futuristic conflict between giant Kaiju, monsters who breach the ocean's surface from the deep sea, and the humans who have become its dominant species, living in giant cities on the surface. The antagonists are created by humans and operate under the direct command of the United States' Joint Task Force Sector Seven, who are led by the character Mako Mori. According to del Toro, the concept for the film began in 2005 when he attended a New York Comic Con, where he was met by a fan dressed as Mako Mori. Del Toro claimed that he decided to make the film at once, as it would be the last film in his original trilogy. Mako Mori is portrayed by Rinko Kikuchi.The film was filmed on location in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Tokyo, Japan. Del Toro hired visual effects artist Tim Alexander, with whom he worked on both Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth, as a visual effects supervisor. Del Toro stated that the story was designed to make the viewer feel that the giant monsters "are part of you and part of your world". The theatrical version was initially titled Pacific Rim, but it was later changed to the titular film. Plot In a dystopian future, mankind has completely submerged itself below the sea, leaving its giant cities at the oceans' surface. The United States has recently developed a weapon, the Jaegers, which are large mechanized humans designed to fight the giant, mecha-like Kaiju. On the US Pacific coast, Jaeger pilots Raleigh Becket and Alaska (renamed from the character in the short story) are assigned to the amphibious Jaeger Gipsy Danger to use it to fight and deter a Kaiju that has been disrupting a radio broadcast by a coastal news station, which is broadcast throughout the US. When the Kaiju starts to approach the coast, Gipsy Danger is launched. The Kaiju is revealed to be an Arclight, a Kaiju that absorbs all Kaiju of a certain kind, including its younger relatives and offspring, and is only triggered when a Kaiju of its kind attacks a Jaeger.
