The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display apparatus, and more particularly to a liquid crystal display apparatus having a light blocking layer. Liquid crystal display apparatuses are presently used extensively for various types of electronic information processing equipment such as digital watches, calculators, electronic computers, television receivers, and the like. Such apparatuses display information with the aid of a light source called a backlight disposed behind the liquid crystal display panel, but tend to be influenced by ambient light such as sunlight. One method of reducing the effect of light from the backlight is to provide a light blocking layer on the liquid crystal display panel. Since the light blocking layer reduces the amount of light passing through the liquid crystal display panel, it is necessary to provide a light source which is more powerful than the one employed in the absence of such a light blocking layer. This tends to increase the power consumption of the apparatus. One possible way of reducing the power consumption is to use an illumination device such as an LED (light emitting diode) which emits a bluish light having a spectrum close to that of sunlight. However, such an illumination device has a disadvantage of making the color temperature of the emitted light appear too high. As another way of reducing the power consumption, the amount of light entering the liquid crystal display panel may be reduced by using a reflective liquid crystal display panel. In this case, a mirror is provided on the light blocking layer so as to reflect the light entering the liquid crystal display panel toward the light blocking layer. Since this arrangement can reduce the amount of light entering the liquid crystal display panel, the power consumption may be reduced.
