Plot The film centers around an inept police detective who investigates a missing persons case, whose body is discovered in the grounds of a remote British island. The police find an English-speaking tourist with a local woman. Their bodies are found in the same manner; crushed by a tree in a ceremonial effigy. The detective begins to believe that the case is not random, but instead a ritual sacrifice on behalf of a pagan cult. He is guided by a man named Niles "Teddy" O'Neil (Nicolas Cage) who claims to be familiar with the sacrifices. A month later on June 22, 2006, British newspaper The Mirror ran an article about a series of shooting locations for the movie, including Shetland Island where the film is set. The newspaper also mentioned Cage had bought an island for the production, which cost £7 million. The Island, on which the film is set, was bought for £7 million by American-born film director Neil LaBute and his wife, actress Inga Le Pleur. Cage wrote the screenplay for the film with Gregory Butler. Butler was first introduced to Cage by Tony Scott during the filming of Fearless (1992). Butler has had a long-term collaboration with screenwriter LaBute, which has included Sincerity (2002), Fat Pig (2005), The Shape of Things (2003) and Bash (2004). Filming started on August 8, 2006, in Northern England. It was announced that Nicolas Cage would be playing the role of the lead character Niles "Teddy" O'Neil. The film was shot entirely on location in Shetland and Orkney, Scotland. It was also filmed at locations in the Scottish highlands.
