1. Contact information

If the hiring manager is interested in your resume and would like to invite you for an interview, you will never want to lose the chance just because he or she doesn’t know how to reach you!

Your contact information should include:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • LinkedIn profile
  • Personal website(optional but recommended)
  • Other social media profiles (optional but recommended if they’re professional)

2. Resume summary/Career goal

This part is regarded as the opening of a resume. Of course, the more appealing it is, the more probably the hiring manager will continue reading your resume.

In addition, it’s the only part you can express your passion towards this job and connect your own achievements. If you are a fresh graduates or a career changer, you may describe your career goal in this part.

Here are the tips for you to build an attractive summary:

  • Start with your title and years of experience in the marketing field.
  • Describe several marketing-related achievements with quantitative indicators to show how much value you can make for the company.
  • If possible, better choose the achievements which have more common points with the job you are applying for.
  • If you are a fresh graduate or a career changer, you can elaborate your career goal and try to make connections with this job. It will be a nice chance for you to demonstrate how much you’ve prepared for the application.

Though you are an experienced worker, you can still set your own career goal. Plan the direction you are going to pursue in this company and show your talent!

3. Work Experiences

Here you are, the most important part of a resume!

To make this long part seem also interesting to the hiring manager, you can follow tips below.

  • Were you an experienced worker, do not list all your experiences to occupy the precious space of the resume. Since you are applying a marketing job, just pick those relevant.
  • On the other hand, fresh graduates or career changers may have fewer marketing experiences. In this situation, you may emphasize other skills this job need, for example, project management and copywriting.
  • Instead of only outlining your duties and responsibilities of former jobs, (which can easily be associated with the job title) you should figure out the “highlights” to make you stand out from all candidates.
  • List your achievements with bullet points and avoid describing with adjectives because it can be too subjective and making the content ling-winded.
  • Use past tense and action verb to start the sentences when mentioning your past experiences.

4. Education

If you have worked for more than 5 years, education will have less influences than working experiences when applying for a job.

However, if you are a fresh graduate or junior worker, you may need to introduce your school experiences to make up the lack of working experiences.

Just like choosing which past job should be mentioned, you should only add valuable contents in this section. Such as relevant coursework, academic awards, student clubs / organizations and leadership roles.

5. Skills

As technology innovates, the ways how to reach customers have been diversified and changed rapidly. This is the reason why digital marketing is a trend which can’t be ignored. Thus, to view your ability of being a marketer, you may take T-shaped skills as reference.

The concept was first mentioned by Professor Dorothy Barton from Harvard Business School in her book Wellsprings of Knowledge (1995). The vertical of the “T” represents a person’s depth in one or more areas, and on the other hand, the horizontal part represents one’s breadth.

When applied in the field of marketing, there are three levels of skills. The top we called it “Best knowledge” which you will need no matter what your job is, such as Data & Analytics, Research and Branding.

The middle level is “Marketing Foundation” that includes marketing-specific subjects, for example, Copy-writing, A/B testing, funnel marketing. The range of marketing area can be really wide so it’s not easy to be familiar with all subjects. However, there are no disadvantages for you to learn more.

The final level which builds the vertical part of “T” definitely represents your core value. The picture below demonstrate the T-shaped skills set of a content marketing member of Buffer. A content marketer is responsible for generating contents, of course the ability of content marketing and SEO are his or her main skills. Also, to promote contents, the member will also need to cover the ability of e-mail, social media, paid ads ... etc.

The image of a T-shaped talent can be different form companies and jobs. Sometimes, If the marketer has built several skilled fields, the image may even look like an "M". Anyway, when measuring and presenting your marketing skills, don’t forget to speak to the job description.

6. Certifications & Awards

There are several certifications you can prepare for if you want to apply a marketing job, especially related to digital marketing area: Google Analytics, Google Ads (Including Search ads, Video ads ... etc).

Facebook, the head of social media, is also planning to launch its certification which allows brand owners to verify their ability of operating social media campaigns and maintain fans’ club.

Compared to other expertises, marketing is the field which we can easily get access to resources and catch the latest trends, so never hesitate to search for new knowledge! For example, online courses can be a convenient way for you to invest in yourself and demonstrate your passion to learn new things.

7. Other experience

As we have discussed above, there are plenty of marketing skills. If you want to learn about a specific skill which you can hardly implement during your current job, it is suggested that you give side project a try.

Although side project may not present the condition of the real market, it can prove that you have invested in a new field. More important is, it can provide you with more chances to get different types of jobs next time.

Here you are the resume sample with other experiences section.

How to choose the right resume format?

1. Order

Now you have lots of good contents to fill your resume, but how to list them? Here are three formats:

  • Chronological (Reverse-chronological) resume: The work experiences are listed in the order of time. The latest will be presented first, and the oldest will be the last.
  • Functional resume: The skills are categorized and the experiences are listed respectively.
  • Hybrid resume: The resume will be combined with the chronological and functional parts. The work experiences are listed in a chronological order while the skills and achievements are highlighted in an individual section.

Chronological format is the most common resume type and will be the best format for the hiring manager to get your recent ability. However, if you have large gaps between jobs, you may change to the functional format that emphasizes your skills instead of the time of your experience.

2. Design

No matter what kind of job you are applying for, remember the only goal of your resume is to present yourself and make others eager to stop to read and learn you more.

Make the information as clear as you can. Does each section be separated clearly? Can titles easily be recognized? If you are good at design, you may customized your resume according to the company to make it more appealing.

If you are troubled by designing or simply looking for a convenient way, online resume builder like CakeResume may be a good choice for you! Apart from words and pictures, CakeResume also provides user to insert multiple elements such as videos, keynotes, maps ... etc.

3. Column

We may want to make our resumes look more special with double columns. However, with the AI tech ATS (Applicant Tracking System) companies use to scan resumes nowadays, it is suggested to arrange your resume with single column to avoid any possibility that your resume be identified wrongly.

ATS is used to compare resumes with job descriptions and it is common used in big companies which receives hundreds of resumes every day. As a result, only if you are sure that your resume will be read by a real human in the first step, don’t risk using unique format.

4. Font

Font is undoubtedly the key to make your resume easy or difficult to read. Imagine you are reading a novel, you will never keep patient if it is printed with fancy font. In the same way, write your resume with classic and professional fonts such as Arial, Calibri, Helvetica and Times New Roman.

If you are applying for a startup job or a company with open-minded culture, you may use sans-serif fonts like Lato or Avenir. No matter which font you choose, remember use no more than two types and 2 colors. Making your resume clear is always the most important issue!
