Experience as a Firmware / Software Engineer

Sr. Firmware/Software Developer, Far East Advance Development Group
TMX Philippines, Inc. (a division of TIMEX Group USA)
April 2017
 - August 2017

Our small, cross-functional team (we call ourselves Ocean's 10) helps explore TMX's venture into OEM business that would bring TIMEX as one of the providers of wearable devices to a Healthcare Wellness Program in the USA (learn more). We brought in what we have started at Fortify Technologies and developed what is considered to be TMX Philippines' first digital fitness wristband activity tracker aimed to be mass produced locally (in Cebu, Philippines).

Sr. Device Firmware Developer, Rapid R&D Department
Fortify Technologies Asia, Inc.
November 2014  - February 2017

We help people move, stay fit, and healthy by making wireless wearable devices, accessories, and software applications. The devices we make are also part of experiments that would answer research questions of data scientists that leads to innovative data products, new business models, process innovation in the healthcare sector, and effective corporate wellness programs.

  • Our team works and collaborates with contract manufacturers and prototyping houses in Shenzhen, China in a fast-paced rapid R&D environment with projects running in parallel. Furthermore, we're building the team, its talent, and growth by developing products that are designed entirely in Cebu and manufactured in the local soil.

  • Responsible for research and development of Firmware, Embedded Systems, and/or Software applications for devices communicating over wireless channels under the health and fitness device category. This includes proof of concept demos, functional prototypes, rapid product design and development and tests.

Key Project in NCR Scanner Team : EEPROM Configuration Tool

Projects 01 00@2x 9a5a97084c8e268ae3725d8e03654d1815ae2eb597b59c292ae4d0beffa7b703

Led the architecture, design, development, and testing of NCR RealScan EEPROM Configuration Tool. It is a standalone software utility that can create, read, compare, convert, and modify Scanner EEPROM binary (bit fields defined in Firmware) as opposed to the industry method of scanning programming sequence tags in front of the scanner in order for the user to be able to configure the hardware.

At its core, all EEPROM bit field definitions are parsed from firmware header files and stored in an encrypted XML file. User interface components are also defined within this encrypted file. The user interface components (for example: group boxes, combo boxes, labels, radio buttons, etc.) are dynamically created at runtime, therefore UI event triggers (event bubbling) are managed and routed at runtime (DOM traversing) as well, managing EEPROM binary object model in memory (which depends on a specific firmware level context the user has selected) and then creates a compatible EEPROM binary file to be downloaded to the EEPROM chip using a Flash tool.

Essentially, the utility is a human-readable UI version of the EEPROM binary. The design of this software was submitted to NCR's internal Invention Disclosure portal emphasizing the novelty of its approach, the method of creating and managing over 800 UI components at runtime using XML files similar to what XAML and other XML-based UI that is popular and standardized now (these were not available at the time it was developed). Unfortunately, patent application was not pursued because the invention disclosure was submitted 3 years after it was developed.

Microcontroller-based Home Control & Security System via SMS

This project allows you to control (on/off switching) your home appliances via a Short Message Service (SMS) using your mobile phone. You can also get status of the devices or appliances that are connected to the server. As a safety & security experiment, a temperature monitoring circuit is connected to the server which will send an SMS or call the owner once the temperature reaches a certain threshold.

Line + Light Follower Mobile Robot with Front & Rear Obstacle Detection

Default operation of the robot acts as a line follower. When it detects an object at the front panel, the robot reverses at about 2-3 inches at the same time checks if an obstacle at the rear panel is present. If there is no obstacle at the rear panel, the robot rotates at about 180 degrees or more depending on the angle of the track and seeks the line and continue to follow the track avoiding the obstacle. If after reversing, the robot detects an obstacle at the rear panel, the robot will shift to a Light Follower Mode. But before it begins to move, the robot must first detect a light. If light has been detected, the robot follows the light ignoring black line tracks it encounters along the way. But if both left and right light sensors of the robot will be lit at the same time, the robot shifts back to its default Line Follower Mode and seeks a line to follow.

IoT Developments in Cebu (2017)

Regulus Berdin, CEO of EZ TechSoft, and I presented some of the IoT Projects developed in Cebu by Companies, Startups, Engineers, and Developers to the executive leaders of Japan Embedded Systems Technology Association (JASA) last Oct 18, 2017. It aims to provide these Japanese delegates a glimpse of the capabilities of Cebu Engineers and Developers as well as Cebu as a location of choice for investment.

IoT: The next wave in IT (2016)

"Passerelles numériques (PN) enables young underprivileged people to build their employability through education in the digital industry, and leverage their potential and willpower; it allows them and their family to escape poverty in a sustainable way, and contribute to the social and economic development of their country." -- Their cause attracted me so easily.

I was invited to speak about The Internet of Things #IoT. It was a fun experience because the students were engaged. They asked a lot of interesting questions (some I couldn't answer). I hope they learned a lot from the talk and hope the students got "PNSpired".

Dad Builds Son an Iron Man Arc Reactor

It was almost too late for us to watch the latest #IronMan flick. But since my eldest, 6 yr old, hero fanatic, Rayne, was not fully aware that the movie was out already, I still have time to build our own version of Iron Man's #ArcReactor . It took a few sessions to complete as I need to build it while he was sleeping.

I surprised my son the day (actually #mothersday ) we were going to the movie house to watch #IronMan3 . The mission was to make him feel that he's a #superhero and so he can put on his Arc Reactor and light it up inside the cinema while watching the movie. He was all smiles and it felt really great! :)

On Past Startups

The First Startup Weekend Cebu (2012)

TeamDigitalLifeline.jpg

"Startup Weekend is an intense 54 hour event which focuses on building a web or mobile application which could form the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend. The weekend brings together people with different skillsets - primarily software developers, graphics designers and business people - to build applications and develop a commercial case around them."

We didn't win but our team Digital Lifeline (formerly TXT2GIVE) was recognized, selected, and invited (together with Codetoki team) at the last minute to participate in a global challenge called AppBridge because the nature of our vision, idea, and concept is targeted to a global scale and for solving real world problems especially for developing countries and for the less fortunate.

"AppBridge is an initiative of the World Economic Forum and was selected to officially launch as a Commitment of the 2011 Clinton Global Initiative. Teams participating in this initiative have chance to meet with former U.S. President Clinton as recognition of their work."

My son Maven (Mavens Heart Fund) was the inspiration to build Digital Lifeline. But the vision doesn't end there. We would like to help people, beneficiaries, NGOs, and donors who are in this situation. We are DIGITAL LIFELINE: Unified Digital Assets Donation platform.

Recommendations / Testimonials (from LinkedIn)

Kristoffer is one of those rare individuals who balances excellent leadership with outstanding technology skills. It was a pleasure working with him through many projects. I knew that his integrity, strong work ethic and sense of ownership of tasks would always result in a high quality product, delivered on-time. I sincerely hope that we can work together in the future.

By J. Stephen McDaniel
Senior Developer/Architect at NCR Corporation

Kristoffer is a very good developer as well as a competent team leader. He is very systematic in approaching a task and very thorough in preparing documentation.

By Rino Sardon Technical Manager | Innovation and Research Manager

For 2 years I've been in NCR, I was very impressed on how he handled things, he was not ever got pressured in any projects. He really follows a systematic way in approaching things. He can manage both his time and the team properly even we are on the peak of work. I also learned a lot from this person especially on decision making & some technical perspective, even until now, I considered him as the best TL I've got. I also consider him as a man with a gift of good leadership & a technically oriented person.

By Mc Alvin Bautista (Team mate)

Kristoffer or we fondly call him Boboy is one of the humblest, and yet very talented professional that I know. We worked together on a couple of projects since college and this guy can wear different hats at the same time without failing to provide impressive and compelling results especially in the area of Sound FX. This guy can create sound FX to interactive flash teasers and the result would be like listening to a million dollar movie trailer done in hollywood on a big screen, amazing huh? Yeah it is...

I can attest to Kristoffer's skills and talent may it be Sound FX production, web design, to multimedia, these are areas in his expertise that I have witnessed and experienced. He is a very important asset to have in any team that he belongs to.

By Peter Paul Tabotabo
Visual Experience Design at ANZ

Kristoffer or 'boboy' as we call him, is a typical silent worker who can lead a group very well. He is technically inclined and well acquainted with the technologies he is handling. He has a sense of humility amidst great accomplishments. Boboy is a good leader and certainly a trustworthy colleague.

Shape Up: Stop Running in Circles and Ship Work that Matters

"Shape Up is for product development teams who struggle to ship. If you’ve thought to yourself “Why can’t we ship like we used to?” or “I never have enough time to think about strategy,” then this book can help. You’ll learn language and techniques to define focused projects, address unknowns, and increase collaboration and engagement within your team."

readings_everybody_matters.jpg

Zero to One

“Doing what someone else already knows how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar. But when you do something new, you go from 0 to 1. The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine. Tomorrow’s champions will not win by competing ruthlessly in today’s marketplace. They will escape competition altogether, because their businesses will be unique.”

Kristoffer is a very good developer as well as a competent team leader. He is very systematic in approaching a task and very thorough in preparing documentation.
