Teja Peltomaa

Social Work Major and Committed Toronto-Area Volunteer

An award-winning former figure skater, Teja Peltomaa is studying for her bachelor of social work at Ryerson University in Toronto. Moreover, Teja Peltomaa has contributed her time as a volunteer to nonprofits that reach out to youth, seniors, and people from underserved populations. In her current such role, Ms. Peltomaa serves as a crisis responder for Kids Help Phone in Toronto. In this capacity, she draws on active-listening, communication, and problem-solving skills to build rapport with and provide text support to people experiencing a crisis.

Ms. Peltomaa’s earlier community-service experience includes work at The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Oakville, Ontario, as a sales assistant. She has also volunteered as a friendly visitor to seniors at Revera Retirement Living, an organizer of supplies for animals going into surgery at Oakville Animal Clinic, and a resource helper at Danielle’s Place. The lattermost of these is a Burlington-based prevention and early intervention center for youth at risk for eating disorders.
