Ray left the UK in 1998, on completing his PhD at Cambridge and getting married, to start over and raise a family in Argentina. On arriving, he worked as an IB teacher in elite bilingual schools before soon ascending into senior management roles and driving success in international examinations. He has always been a teacher from his early career to the present moving from high school to university teaching over time. His areas of specialty include US history and politics and cultural studies. In a substantial and rewarding teaching career he has worked broadly in the humanities and social sciences enthusiastic about equipping young minds with the critical thinking required in times of rapid transformation.
In private professional work Ray has extensive experience as a translator from Spanish to English and as a project manager working with a variety of languages. He has translated for news media, public relations officers, conference organisers and presenters in diverse educational and corporate contexts. He was the principal translator of Tenaris-Argentina for a project requiring the translation of their entire LMS global content, and led a hand-picked team working with a variety of European and Asian languages. In 2012 he founded his own company Clio Language Services SRL in Argentina which, while maintaining its core translation and localization business, has developed consultancy roles in language education. Clio has designed language curricula for national and provincial government ministries and departments, with a direct focus on language learning platforms. Ray embraces technological change and the challenges it brings and has led his company to enable educational providers to transition from in-person to online environments in the context of the 2020 Covid pandemic. Ray is a tenured professor in the Language and Foreign Studies department where he delivers lectures, seminars and tutorials, designs, prepares and develops courses and teaching materials, develops and implements new methods of teaching to reflect changes in research and supervises students' research activities, including final year undergraduate projects and Masters dissertations.
The "Lenguas Vivas" is a nationally renowned state teacher training college in the prosperous neighborhood of Recoleta in Buenos Aires city. Founded in 1912 it offers four year degree programmes which officially qualify language teachers of English, French, German, Portuguese to work in the state education sector in Argentina. Ray has taught Cultural Studies and American History in the English department since relocating from the UK in 1998.
The Liceo Cultural Británico, founded in 1935, comprises sixteen schools throughout the city and province of Buenos Aires. Ray’s role was to enable the organization to transition from in-person to online environments in the context of the 2020 Covid pandemic. He ensured the teachers developed the ability to integrate the technology required for online learning into their professional skills portfolios. He was responsible for observing teachers in virtual environments and giving constructive feedback of the observation. He aided the teachers in their schemes of work and lesson planning for online contexts and held workshops for the teachers periodically complementing one-on-one direct coaching techniques.
St Hilda's is an English/Spanish bilingual Anglican school located in the province of Hurlingham in Buenos Aires renowned for a thriving music department rugby and hockey team and outstanding Cambridge examinations performances. Ray's role was to ensure that students were classed appropriately, and placed in the right levels related to language and academic abilities. He ensured the teachers prepared for their lessons to a high standard. He was responsible for observing the teachers and for giving constructive feedback of the observation. He aided the teachers in their schemes of work and lesson planning and held workshops for the teachers periodically. As a DOS Ray was highly energetic, personable, well organised, multi-tasking and resilient under pressure.
Essarp is an association of Argentine schools founded in 1926 to promote British-style education. While maintaining cultural connections to the UK the body has become the leading international examinations administrator and teacher-training centre in the region. Ray has coached teachers and other staff through leading a classroom properly. This has included planning classroom curriculum and delivering training courses for teachers of various backgrounds specifically related to Cambridge international examinations preparation.
Northlands School is a co-educational, non-denominational bilingual school with campuses in Olivos and Nordelta, founded in 1920. It is among the largest and most successful IB schools in the region. Ray was contracted as an IB diploma History and Economics teacher on arriving in Argentina in 1998. After being promoted to head of Economics and Business Studies during his first years of service in the context of a national economic crisis that engulfed Argentina, within four years he headed the entire social studies area of the secondary school leading a diverse multilingual staff responsible for the portfolio of social studies and humanities subjects of the IB.
