Autobiography

I’m HONG CHEN HSIEN. I graduated from Oversee Chinese University in food and beverage management. “Fake it till you make it ” I usually use this sentence as my motto to help me through every challenge of my life, and the stage of my life could be roughly divided into the study stage, the part-time work experience and the way I learn English from scratch.

Through the time when I just came into university, a young person transferred his major from design to the culinary industry, so drastically different, feeling afraid and unfamiliar. Even so, I’m still passionate and starting on an arduous journey to get to know myself more. During the study stage, I am obsessed with how to handle things methodically, and I get an exceptional sense of accomplishment in the process of practice.

Regarding work, I began the route when I was 16 years old. As far as I’m concerned, I think, in addition to the guidance of school teachers, we also have to gain more practical experience from work and truly understand all the operations in the industry. Therefore, I had several part-time job experiences before entering university. In the second semester, no sooner had I got the west cuisine certification than I started looking for a job in the culinary industry. Partly due to experience in the workplace, and partly due to previous learning in class, I can handle any problems well with a proactive attitude, even if it’s unexpected. Because of this, I often receive encouragement and recognition from the supervisor.

As I gradually got on the right track, having more ability to work in deluxe restaurants, then I realized the importance of English. Whenever foreigners come dine with us, I can only communicate with them by gesturing or asking my colleagues to help me because my English is very poor. Recognizing my lack of ability, I made up my mind to leave the workplace temporarily to enhance my language skills. Use the existing resources to start learning English seriously from scratch. The learning process is very painful, and the thought of giving up is constantly in my mind. The exam paper is covered in red ink, and the vocabulary and grammar are ceaselessly waiting for me. But now, to my satisfaction, I never regret that decision I made at the beginning, because I learned self-discipline from it. I think self-discipline is the foundation of doing things. No matter what you are facing, you need to have this quality. Self-discipline to focus on everything, self-discipline to do the daily plan planning goals. Day after day, I was working assiduously to get this achievement and because of this process, I got 895 points on the TOEIC exam.

The industrious learning at university, experience in the workplace and overcoming the language learning barrier. I’m grateful that I held on to these rather than wasting them and strengthening my preparation for a future job. I hope I can apply what I have learned and know in my future work to contribute to the company.
