Best Food Markets in NYC

United States
For adventurous eaters, there’s no place like the mouth-watering markets of New York City. Hungry visitors to the markets quickly realize that the problem isn’t finding something good enough to eat, it’s finding enough room in your stomach for everything that you want to eat. Let’s dig into some of New York’s most popular food markets and you’ll see what I mean. Union Square Greenmarket What started out as a modest market in 1944 has grown into a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike. The Union Square Greenmarket hosts around 140 vendors at peak season and is arguably one of the best locations to purchase seasonal produce. In the makeshift stalls you’ll also find fresh products from local fishermen, farmers, butchers, cheesemongers, beekeepers, you name it! Throughout the year the Greenmarket also stages cooking demonstrations and book signings, plus there’s an education station that provides tours, displays, and tastings. Chelsea Market Located just north of New York’s old Meatpacking District, the Chelsea Market has exploded in popularity over the last few years. With dozens of vendors selling everything delicious under the sun, this hip foodhall attracts more than 6 million visitors each year. Visitors can also buy cooking supplies and collectables and take advantage of seasonal pop-up shops, but the main attraction will always be the finger-licking food options. Smorgasburg With a name that practically invokes hunger pangs, Smorgasburg is one foodie destination that lives up to the hype. It boasts the title of the largest open-air market in the United States—not bad considering it’s only been around for a decade. Hungry NYers and in-the-know tourists flock to Smorgasburg for a taste of elevated foods and innovative fusion cuisine. The New York Times has dubbed this market the “Woodstock of Eating,” attracting more than twenty thousand people each weekend to sample the dishes. My advice: don’t just jump onto the first line that looks good. Walk around and check out all the vendors before making your decision. Nothing worse than filling up early and spending the rest of the afternoon with food envy! Arthur Ave Retail Market A favorite among native Italians and food-lovers alike, the Arthur Ave Retail Market is considered the Little Italy of the Bronx. The speciality shops along this strip have been owned and operated by families for generations. You can find practically every variety of Italian cuisine here. It’s a one-stop shop for homemade breads and sausages, dried meats, olive oil, and (of course) fresh pasta. This article was originally published at JulieZuckerberg.org
