The most anticipated new smartphones coming in 2022

Upcoming smartphone releases to keep on your watchlist

Remember when supply chain dramas didn’t threaten to disrupt the launch of every major tech product? Such is life during a pandemic. Still, while the processor shortage isn’t totally solved, mobile makers do at least seem to have a handle on the chip sitch.

Which is good news for smartphone fans: with production plans looking a little less wobbly, 2022 is shaping up as a bumper year for handsets. From affordable blowers to folding phones to flagship devices, there’s plenty in store from the big names and upstarts of the mobile industry.

Keen to stay on top of what’s around the corner? We’ve rounded up the confirmed releases, probable launches and rumoured reveals to tell you exactly which smartphones you can expect to see in 2022 – as well as a few we’re hoping emerge from under wraps. Plus we’ll keep this list regularly updated with news of upcoming smartphone launches.

The biggest smartphones released so far in 2022

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE

After the success of last year’s Galaxy S20 FE – or ‘Fan Edition’ – the follow-up model treads a finer line between affordable flagship and mid-range wingman to the full-fat Samsung Galaxy S21. It packs the same 5nm processor tech, the same 120Hz refresh rates and the same 12MP main camera as the headline handset but, at £699 ($699), costs £70 ($100) less for the 128GB version.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Series

Samsung’s latest line-up of flagship smartphones features three models: the standard Galaxy S22, the larger S22 Plus and the flagship S22 Ultra, which standards apart in terms of specs, styling and price. The S22 and Plus follow closely in the footsteps of last year’s S21, while the top-end S22 Ultra takes up the phablet mantle from the now-defunct Note series – complete with S Pen support.

The best upcoming 2022 phones

Xiaomi 12

Snapdragon’s new 8 Gen 1 processor has arrived, ready to power the next generation of Android flagships. And the Xiaomi 12 could be one of the first blowers out of the box with the new chip.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 paired a flagship spec sheet with premium looks at a sensible price, even if its software wasn’t the most refined. If the Xiaomi 12 goes the same way, it could be one of 2022’s best-value handsets.

With no more ‘Mi’ in the name, the Xiaomi 12 is predicted to launch in the first few months of 2022. Rumours about the new device abound, with talk of everything from 200MP main cameras to under-display selfie snappers.

Probably the more realistic expectation is that the Xiaomi 12 will improve on its predecessor by boosting performance, tweaking camera quality and sticking with broadly the same design. All of which should make it a stellar smartphone – provided the incoming MIUI 13 interface isn’t too clunky.

Touted as Realme’s “first and most premium flagship”, the GT 2 Pro is also set to ship equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. Previous Realme devices have delivered top-notch performance at more affordable prices than the big-name blower brands, but they’ve always cut a couple of corners to get there.

Last year’s Realme GT, for example, featured a fantastic CPU, punchy 120Hz display and glass back – but also had average battery life and cameras.

That approach looks set to change in 2022, with Realme lining up to launch an “ultra-premium flagship”. Early reports suggest the GT 2 Pro will support lightning-fast 125W charging, run Realme’s UI 3.0 (based on Android 12) and pack a 50MP primary camera – all in addition to that cutting-edge Snapdragon processor.

Pricing is far from confirmed, but we’d expect the Realme GT 2 Pro to hit shelves somewhere around the £475 / $650 mark when it arrives (which should be in the first quarter).

OnePlus 10 / Pro

We already knew that OnePlus would be skipping the 9T and moving straight to the OnePlus 10 and OnePlus 10 Pro flagships in 2022.

Rather than keep its new smartphones under wraps, OnePlus has already revealed the full design and specs for the Pro model. True to leaked renders, the powerhouse packs a wraparound camera housing which harbours triple 48MP, 50MP and 8MP sensors with Hasselblad optics.

Beneath its natty matte shell lives Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 silicone, a huge 5000mAh battery (with support for rapid 80W wired charging) plus top-end LDDR5 RAM. Up front, buyers will find a 6.7in 120Hz AMOLED display.

Details about the OnePlus 10 are less concrete – and there’s still no firm word on when exactly either will hit shelves in the UK or US. But with the OnePlus 10 Pro already available in China, we hopefully shouldn’t have too long to wait. Watch this space.

Our key 2021 phone reviews

Looking for a smartphone you can buy right now? Here’s an overview of every phone we’ve already reviewed in 2021. Click the link to read each review in full.

Apple iPhone 13 Mini: Outwardly similar to the iPhone 12 Mini, this upgrade meaningfully improves the camera and battery life of Apple’s most pocketable iPhone.

Apple iPhone 13: No poor relation to the Pro, there’s so much to love about 2021’s mainstream iPhone.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro: Apple’s most accomplished phone in 2021, with a beefy A15 Bionic chip, a battery to last at least a full day and the best camera system on any smartphone.

Apple iPhone Pro Max: Camera and battery improvements alone make the iPhone 13 Pro Max a significant upgrade for fans of the biggest iPhone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Too pricey for most of us, but good enough to turn hardened folding phone sceptics into firm believers.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: The world’s most affordable folding phone is beautifully made, delightfully quirky and a lot of fun to use.

Google Pixel 6 Pro: Ambitious, uncompromising and with incredible photographic ability, the Pixel 6 Pro is the best Google phone yet.

Redmi Note 10 Pro: Budget smartphones don’t get better than this. Provided you can live with a few interface gremlins, this is a 108MP value bonanza.

Motorola Edge 20 Pro: Want high-end specs for half the cash? This is one of the most affordable ways to get 5x zoom on a smartphone.

Honor 50: Honor’s first solo effort away from the Huawei mothership packs design punch and a gorgeous screen, plus Google’s apps – but rivals either match it for the money.

Xiaomi 11T Pro: A mid-tier marvel that puts pricier phones on notice with its rapid charging, smooth performance and capable camera.

Sony Xperia 5 III: Not much of an improvement over last year’s model, but still a feature-packed media machine.

OnePlus 9 Pro: OnePlus’s best camera phone to date with top performance and style too, why only a 4,500 mAh battery, though!?

Oppo Find X3 Pro: Not the biggest brand, but this is a fantastic flagship with killer specs and a cool microlens perk.

ASUS ROG Phone 5: Do you need a gaming phone? Probably not, but if so, this is the best one you’ll find right now.

ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro: A spec refresh in familiar hardware, but still the best gaming phone we’ve tested.

Sony Xperia 1 III: This top-end stunner might not be for novices, but it really is brilliant.

OnePlus Nord 2: Another flagship killer from OnePlus, with a nice build, excellent main camera and powerful performance – as long as you don’t need two-day battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G: A big, beastly phone with dazzling cameras – but more than you probably need.

Samsung Galaxy S21: The plastic backing is a downgrade, but this is a stylish, well-equipped handset.

OnePlus 9: Camera upgrades balance out a design downgrade, but still a phone that’s easy to recommend to most.

Realme GT: A budget beast with huge power for the price, but iffy cameras.

Motorola Moto G50: A totally solid £200 5G phone for those on a budget.

OnePlus Nord CE 5G: Want an affordable, lightweight and elegant 5G phone? Bingo.

Asus Zenfone 8: A pleasingly compact and powerful phone with iffy battery life.

Xiaomi Mi 11: A slick flagship at a more palatable price, albeit with software and camera niggles.

Realme 8 Pro: A boldly-stylised budget flagship with a punchy screen and solid power. Great value!

Motorola Moto G30: Low on power, but an incredible value – with a 90Hz screen, too!

Vivo X60 Pro: Stunning gimbal-assisted video shooting, but with weaknesses elsewhere.

Motorola Moto G9 Plus: Not as cheap, but a smoother overall experience at a good price.

Motorola Moto G100: A proper mid-ranger from Moto, but only truly great if you plan to use the productivity accessories.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G: It’s a cheap 5G phone with some notable issues.

Huawei Mate X2: An awesome foldable device, albeit one held back by the lack of Google services.

Motorola Moto G10: Shockingly cheap, but you should pay the £30 extra for the G30 instead.

Microsoft Surface Duo: Sleek hardware and clever ideas can’t salvage this sluggish, buggy misfire.

Nokia G50: A big screen and 5G support make the G50 an ideal phone for stream fiends trying not to break the bank.
