Penn State Inventors, which started in December 2012 and is composed of undergraduate engineering students, is the winner of the contract from the U.S. Commerce for the NSF Engineering Research Center for Smart Manufacturing. The $1 million contract, which will run through the 2018 academic year, will be awarded to the student organization on Thursday at the center's meeting in Los Angeles. The project, led by Penn State engineering professor Jose L. Castillo, uses engineering to model a real-world manufacturing process. The project utilizes factory machines and modeling software to synthesize an industrial-grade powder and then combine it with materials to create a variety of parts. The final products include a polycarbonate pitcher, a carbon fiber composite racing car and a custom steel machine tool, Penn State said. Castillo said that the project is the first time a university-run manufacturing process has been used in the United States. "Penn State has been at the forefront of industrial-scale manufacturing for some time now, and we are excited to partner with the NSF to take things to the next level," Castillo said in a statement. "The new center will put us at the forefront of using technology to design, prototype and build large-scale, real-world equipment and processes." Through the U.S. Commerce grant, the university's team will work on the Model Shop, a machine that will create a live model of a part as it is being manufactured. A company or product manager can use the model to simulate changes to the design and test how they will affect the process. The device will also be equipped with 3D scanners that will capture and convert objects to computer-aided design models, according to Penn State. With the NSF grant, the Model Shop can create products with scales up to 25,000 square feet, according to Penn State. The NSF grant will be used to refine the lab, as well as to buy new equipment, Penn State said. Penn State said the Model Shop is part of the university's Model Shop Factory, an initiative that was founded in 2014. The school said it has been able to produce prototypes at scales of up to 25,
