In both cases, the value of was estimated by averaging the force over the first two cycles, where. The same procedure was followed to obtain the values of and. Figure 1. As an example, Figure 1 shows the values of (black squares), (grey triangles) and (blue circles) estimated from the force trace measured with an instrumented tendon hammer with a force sensor (see Methods). The error bars in the figure represent the uncertainty range of the average over at least 10 trials. Tendon force and length As discussed in (1), is the maximum of the tendon force, which is produced when the muscle is fully active, and is the tendon force at rest. The values of and can be estimated from the maximum force of the contraction,, and the force of a minimum of the contraction,, that is,. However, due to the hysteresis of the tendon (see below), the force of a minimum of the contraction can only be determined in the second half of a contraction (see Methods). The values of and are shown in Figure 1 in grey and blue, respectively. As can be seen in Figure 1, and have similar values. That is, the resting tendon force is similar to the maximum tendon force. In addition, the difference between the forces for the resting and maximum states of the muscle is very small. Tendon hysteresis It is important to distinguish between two types of hysteresis: passive and active hysteresis. Passive hysteresis is a result of the nonlinear behavior of the tendon (see (2)). Active hysteresis is the result of the physical properties of the muscles. Because of the nonlinear muscle behavior, which results in the force–length relationship (see (3)), the value of the tendon force during a contraction is different from the maximal value of the tendon force. This value can be determined using measurements at different lengths (see Methods). Figure 2 shows the tendon force at the maximum length as a function of the tendon force at rest, and for the two muscles in Figure 1. The error bars indicate the standard deviation over the 10 different measurements at different lengths. The data points are shown in red (Eqn. 6) and in green (Eqn. 7) for the lower and upper tendons, respectively. The tendon force at rest is defined as the maximal value of the tendon
