Douglas Rosenthal: Biotechnology techniques

Research Scientist @ Cleveland Center for Membrane and Structural Biology (CCMSB)
Cleveland, OH, USA

Cell culture is one of the most used techniques in biotechnology. According to Douglas Rosenthal, one of the first techniques used by biotechnology is bioprocessing: using the cells or their components to obtain the desired products. Microbial fermentation is an ancestral example of bioprocessing.

Through fermentation, it is possible to obtain bread, cheeses, wines, beers and many other products. Recently, cell culture is used in the laboratory or industry to obtain medications, vitamins, proteins and antibodies. Cell culture is based on growing cells outside its original organism.

Recombination DNA The term "recombination DNA" refers to "joining" two pieces of DNA from different organisms. With recombination DNA techniques you can choose the gene of an organism that interests us, and introduce it into another living being. Monoclonal antibodies As Rosenthal reports on his Academia profile, the monoclonal antibody technique uses cells of the immune system to produce proteins called antibodies
