Driven By Purpose, Not Position

My journey is molded by Purpose, not by titles. There were moments when I pondered why life's trials chose me so readily. Yet, I recall standing here due to the trailblazers who set a path for me, enabling me to shape my fate. Our life lessons define our essence, and the obstacles we face fortify our determination to make a mark on the world.

My grandfather, who made the journey from the South to NYC, once imparted, Desi, your name is your most valuable asset. Safeguard it and ensure it's honored. My grandmother's wisdom was clear: Always speak the truth, even if it's hard to hear. My resilient great-grandmother faced racial prejudice when she bought a home in an unwelcoming neighborhood, but she stood her ground. Her legacy? The house she left for her descendants. My mother, a pioneer and former Black Panther, taught me resilience, telling me her tale of facing bigotry head-on during her school years in Brooklyn's Bensonhurst.

Never let challenges deter your progress, she advised. Be the change, even if the path is filled with obstacles. Remember your Purpose.

I've faced unique challenges, being often the youngest, the sole female, and one of the few people of color in political decision-making roles. Yet, adversity only deepened my dedication to a purpose-driven life. I vividly recall the traumatic day in July 2003 at the New York City Council Chamber when Councilman James Davis was fatally shot. That event almost shattered my spirit. But it ultimately strengthened my resolve.

My journey led me from the legal field to politics and government, where I desired to understand the systems that impacted lives. From Washington, D.C., to NYC, I became a voice for positive change, advocating for policies that truly mattered.

The shooting in City Hall tested my mettle, but it only bolstered my determination. Time and again, I faced challenges that tried to mute my voice. But fueled by my Purpose, I pushed forward.

While serving as Communications Director for then-Mayor Cory Booker, we revolutionized content creation in government by embracing social media to share Newark's positive stories. This move was daring, but it showcased how cities could reclaim their narratives.

Throughout my career, even when holding prominent roles in Mayor Michael Nutter's administration, it wasn't the titles but my undying will that made the difference. Balancing my professional commitments with family was challenging, yet my Purpose always steered me right.

I've shared moments with influential figures like President Obama and even high-fived Pope Francis. But it's not the titles or accolades that define me; it's the legacy of my ancestors and the knowledge that I am building upon their foundations.

My drive is guided by Purpose, not by prestige. It's a mantra I frequently share with young women and girls of color. I urge them to find their passion and let it illuminate their path, irrespective of their challenges.

The political realm is tumultuous, but we all have a passion that fuels us. Hold onto it and lead a life defined by Purpose.

In these trying times, passive observation isn't enough. Speak up. Never let anyone mute your voice.

My journey is a testament to resilience and determination. I've had to strive for excellence, as my mother consistently advised. To every individual, especially the young women I mentor and my daughter, always remember: you are an unstoppable force empowered by Purpose.
