Biography Background Born Jane Louise Goebbels in 1897 in Tilsit in the Province of East Prussia, Germany, to Joseph Goebbels and Marie Louise Hertz, her mother having died a month earlier when Jane was just a few days old. Jane's father was an employee of the East Prussian Railway Company. When Jane was just three, her father remarried and moved to Hamburg, leaving the child with her paternal grandmother. Jane Goebbels spent her early years with her grandmother in the family home. She lived with her grandmother and went to school locally, with occasional visits to her mother and her step-mother. Her father was not known to be particularly close to her and both her step-mother and grandmother disliked her. During her early teens, her grandmother moved with her daughter into a cottage in Königsbruch and left Jane in the care of her maternal grandfather, Dr. Karl-Josef Hertz. From this time on, until her death, Dr. Hertz was her primary male guardian. In 1913 she went to Berlin, to be educated at the Jeunesse Ouvrière de Berlin, where she met the future Hitler. They were lovers until 1933, with no children as a result of their union. Nazi propaganda During the 1920s, Jane Goebbels's relationship with Hitler became more prominent. She was the celebrity of the Nazi press, and her influence was such that Hitler was described in some quarters as her "favourite apostle". However, the relationship between her and Hitler suffered a period of strain after Adolf's failed attempted coup in Munich in 1923. Hitler lived with his parents for a time during this period. They lived in the suburb of Munich-Allach. She was referred to in the Hitler family as his "housekeeper" or "secretary". It has been claimed that she would help Hitler work on his books by typing. After the death of Hitler's parents in February 1933, she
