The procedure for obtaining a pregnancy test should be performed in a sterile fashion, and under the supervision of the nurse on call and the attending physician. The procedure for testing a pregnant patient should be as follows: First, a urine or blood sample is obtained by the nurse for pregnancy testing. The nurse may also obtain blood or urine samples for an initial workup in other medical situations. The timing of the sample depends on the setting in which the pregnancy test is being done. If a urine specimen is obtained for a pregnancy test, the patient must be standing, in a private place, and using a sterile container. First, the midstream collection of urine is obtained by asking the patient to void, and having the patient urinate in a sterile container. After collection, the urine is analyzed.
