All children received oral rehydration solution plus electrolyte solution and were observed daily for vomiting. The overall rate of diarrhoea and the number of days until the first diarrhoea was significantly lower in the probiotic group (11/58, 19.0%) than in the placebo group (18/57, 31.6%). The probiotic group also had a significantly shorter duration of diarrhoea (mean 3.9 days) than did the placebo group (mean 4.8 days). In the probiotic group, the mean number of bowel movements was 1.8 and the mean stool consistency score was 1.5, whereas in the placebo group, the corresponding values were 2.7 and 1.4, respectively.
