Thoughts on A Whole New World If you’ve read this blog for any amount of time, you’ll know I’m a big fan of American movies, especially musicals. So when I got a promotion to work on the musical adaptation of The Wiz, I was thrilled. The whole thing sounded absolutely delicious! (It did.) I loved working on this production for several reasons. I got to work with some of the most talented and fun people I’ve ever had the pleasure of calling colleagues. On top of that, we were in the middle of a very difficult time with last minute casting decisions and a very short timeline to begin rehearsals. I felt like we were getting along like gangbusters with everybody while still trying to keep everything on schedule. We opened the show last night in DC. I did a very casual blog about the experience and would like to go through a few of the highlights I was able to experience. One of the highlights of the show was finally getting to perform the opening number. To this day, I’m not sure if it was nerves or excitement, but I finally got to do the opening number of my own work. I was super nervous. I’ve been working on it for a long time and my mentor and producer were there in the audience. I was so excited that they were there, I can still remember the moment they walked in. It was so great seeing all the faces that had worked on the show come out to see me, including choreographers, designers, dancers, and our very own Casting Director, Grant North, who had been working on this show since the very beginning. We had a little show in which they talked about the show before we opened. I was at the edge of my seat, unable to sleep the night before. It was amazing to hear people come on stage and talk about their experience with the show, including memories from when the original show had closed. It was a fantastic feeling being able to share that with them, even if only for a few moments. After the show, I was able to finally talk to the cast about the show and the process. I love that it was a place where we could be supportive, understanding, and have fun with each other. It was a wonderful feeling of camaraderie and trust.
