Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is the third game in the Mortal Kombat series, originally released on the Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) video game console on September 16, 2005 in North America and September 28, 2005 in Europe. Unlike its predecessors, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks does not feature guest characters from the Mortal Kombat games, instead opting to have the title characters make cameo appearances. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is a first-person beat 'em up in the third-person perspective. Much like the previous two games in the series, there are no voiceovers in the game. The majority of the events in the game take place in Shaolin Monastery, with the exception of the ending, which takes place at Shang Tsung's palace. The events of the game are interconnected, with a few events occurring in some other parts of the game. There are a total of nine playable characters: Lui Kang - The original protagonist of the Mortal Kombat series, and a playable character in the game's story mode. He is accompanied by Kung Lao, who assists him with different combat techniques. Liu Kang - As in the first Mortal Kombat, Liu Kang is a playable character in the game's story mode. He is accompanied by Kung Lao, who assists him with different combat techniques. Kitana - Kitana is the only Mortal Kombat character who can transform herself into a female version of her male self. She is accompanied by a female ninja, Mileena. Kung Lao - Kung Lao is the other playable character in the game's story mode. He is accompanied by Liu Kang, who assists him with different combat techniques. Kitana - Kitana is the only Mortal Kombat character who can transform herself into a female version of her male self.
