National Park Spotlight: Yellowstone National Park

It is no wonder that Yellowstone National Park evokes a feeling of awe and adventure. With breathtaking views, diverse ecology, and unique geology, Yellowstone is one of the most interesting places to visit. Geology Yellowstone National Park sits on an active volcano. Because of this, the park is home to boiling springs, waterfalls, geysers, and other hydrothermal features. Notable geysers include Old Faithful and Riverside Geyser. Both of these can be found in an active geyser area called the Upper Geyser Basin. Throughout the majority of the park, visitors can find hot springs. Often these springs can exceed 400 degrees Fahrenheit and are exceptionally beautiful and colorful. In part, these colors are due to microorganisms living within the springs. In stark contrast to the steam and heat of the hydro-thermal areas, Canyon Village is comprised of rocky mountain canyons and waterfalls. Hayden Valley within the canyon allows park visitors an ideal location to view animals including bison, wolves, bears, and elk. Wildlife In addition to the incredible geology and scenery, Yellowstone National Park is home to a plethora of animals. While visiting the park, visitors may see bison, elk, mule deer, birds, bears, and potentially wolves. Depending on what time of year Yellowstone is visited, the wildlife may vary considerably. Those who choose to visit during spring may be fortunate enough to see bears and cubs in addition to young calves and bison. An added benefit of springtime visits to Yellowstone is minimal crowds, as the majority of individuals visit during summer. However, during summer fishing and hiking both are at their peak. Although fishing may be more popular during the summer in Yellowstone, many fish can be seen in the various streams during the fall. The fall also provides the interesting opportunity to explore Yellowstone during elk mating season. During the winter, park visitors are more likely to see both wolves and bison. This is in part due to the decreased crowd interference and increased visibility in the snow. Activities Yellowstone has both structured and independent activities. Sightseeing options including horseback riding, bicycling, and hiking is popular in the summer, whereas guided snow coaches are the primary sightseeing option in the winter. For those seeking a more adventurous visit, back-country camping, backpacking, and wilderness courses are available. The options and diversity in Yellowstone are extensive. With a variety of activities, this National Park offers an option for nearly any visitor. This article was originally published at RodShegem.org
