The Naming Dilemma: Understanding the Term 'Neglected Tropical Diseases

Professor Kishor Wasan explained that neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) is a term that echoes with a double layer of meaning, each word encapsulating an aspect crucial to understanding the scope and urgency of the problem they represent. So, why are these diseases categorized as "neglected" and "tropical"?

Starting with the term "tropical," these diseases are primarily confined to tropical and subtropical regions characterized by warm climates. These are places where a combination of heat, humidity, and limited access to clean water and sanitation create an environment ripe for the proliferation of various pathogens. However, the geographical connotation also often relegates these diseases to being considered "someone else’s problem" by those living in temperate zones, thus contributing to their neglect on the global stage.

The term "neglected" captures the essence of the global community's oversight. The neglect manifests in several dimensions, including research and development, healthcare infrastructure, public awareness, and international aid. Compared to other infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS or malaria, NTDs receive less funding and attention. Major pharmaceutical companies are generally reluctant to invest in cures or vaccines, as the financial returns are minimal. The market has essentially 'failed' these diseases, which need to be addressed.

But labeling them as "neglected" is a call to action, not just a critique. The term aims to spotlight these diseases, pulling them out of the shadows of indifference and onto the global health agenda. By identifying them as neglected, the public health community can prioritize them for action, drawing attention to the disparities in healthcare access and encouraging resource allocation to tackle them.

Furthermore, the naming merges various conditions—parasitic, bacterial, and viral—under a single umbrella, making it easier for policy planners, researchers, and funders to develop comprehensive strategies for their control or eradication. It allows for collective action against a shared category of diseases that have long been overlooked despite their massive impact on global health.

In summary, the name "Neglected Tropical Diseases" is not just an idle label but a strategic term laden with implications. It indicates not just what and where these diseases are but also how they have been treated—or not treated—by the world. By understanding the term's multifaceted meaning, we are better equipped to address the needs of the billion-plus people affected by these devastating diseases.
