The ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ movie has just premiered in Japanese theatres, but what date could the anime film release for streaming and on which platform?

In the weeks leading up to the season 1 finale of Jujutsu Kaisen, there were reports circulating on social media that an online domain was registered for a movie.

Only hours before the finale aired on March 26th, this was confirmed with the announcement that a movie by the title of ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ (also referred to as JJK0) will be produced by MAPPA.

So, what is the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie about, what date will it release for online streaming and how can you watch the film around the world?

JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 MOVIE LANDS IN JAPANESE THEATRES…

In March 2021, alongside the release of the first teaser trailer, it was announced that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 would debut in Winter of this year.

Then, following an event in Japan, the production team then confirmed that the film would premiere on Christmas Eve.

Thankfully the ongoing pandemic didn’t affect the release of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, with the anime movie making its theatrical debut in Japanese theatres on December 24th, 2021.

At the time of writing, the opening sales for the movie have been fantastic by any standards. According to Anime News Network, the film grossed more than $23 million in its first three days, topping the Box Office charts.

Incredibly, this makes Jujutsu Kaisen 0 the second-biggest opening day in Japanese box office history – only behind the phenomenon that was Demon Slayer: Mugen Train i.e., the highest-grossing movie of 2021 worldwide.

At the time of writing, an international theatrical release date has not been confirmed by Toho (the movie’s distributors). However, based on the typical period between domestic and international anime releases, fans can expect to head to theatres sometime around April 2022.

WHAT IS JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 ABOUT?

JJK0 is an adaptation of the prequel story to the anime series, titled ‘Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School’.

Per the Jujutsu Kaisen Fandom page, the movie will adapt the Cursed Child Arc. The story here is about a young boy called Yuta Okkotsu, who is haunted by his childhood friend Rika.

Rika’s spirit has been cursed and turns into a cursed-entity that mercilessly kills anyone who she deems a threat to Yuta.

Yuta is convinced to join Jujutsu High by Satoru Gojo and begins to train in Jujutsu sorcery, “alongside his new peers: Maki Zenin, a Cursed Tools user, Toge Inumaki, a Cursed Speech user, and Panda, a seemingly talking panda bear.”

WHEN WILL JUJUTSU KAISEN RELEASE FOR STREAMING?

Unfortunately, at the time of writing, no major streaming platform has publicly acquired the digital streaming rights for Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

Similarly, the production team of MAPPA nor the distributors of Toho have shared when the film will become available for international release, both theatrical or OTT streaming.

However, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is expected to be released for international streaming in Summer 2022. This is because the movie will only release digitally several months after the international theatrical debut, which remains itself unconfirmed at this time.

The movie is also expected to land for online streaming first on the Crunchyroll streaming service, who simulcast the first television season.

Other platforms such as Funimation may also acquire the streaming rights, following the merger with Crunchyroll earlier this year and who added season 1 to their library in October.
