Aim

Investigate the sense of agency when working with others in an environment where participants have ‘objectively’ the same amount of control over the outcome in both social and non-social contexts.

Variables

  • Independent Variables
  • Dependent Variables
  1. Conditions: (playing “alone” or “together” with a co-player)
  2. Points belong (To participants or co-player)

Sense of agency scores

Hypothesis

  1. Conditions have a significant effect on the sense of agency
  2. Points belong to have a significant effect on the sense of agency
  3. Interaction between the two variables will not be found

Method

  1. Participants were required to stop the ball from rolling down the slope. Starting off with 1000 points, they could lose up to 20 and a minimum of 11 of these points in each trial.
  2. At the beginning of ‘alone’ trials, “YOU” will be shown on the screen indicating that participants will be playing for themselves. Next, participants saw a ball lying on top of a tilted bar, which started rolling down toward the lower end of the bar. Participants were instructed to stop the ball from rolling by pressing the space bar. The later the participants stop the ball, the lesser points they will lose.
  3. At the beginning of the ‘together’ trials, participants saw “TOGETHER” on the screen. Participants were instructed that they are working together as a team and either of the players could press the space bar to stop the ball.
  4. If no one acted, both players would lose the maximum amount of points.
  5. If the co-player acted, participants will not lose any points.
  6. If the participant acted, the participant will lose points according to the position of the ball and the co-player will not lose points.
  7. Scores were shown to the participants immediately after each attempt.
  8. At the end of each trial, participants were required to rate how much control they felt they have over the outcomes on a slider scale

Results

  1. Significant effects were found between points belonging and conditions on the sense of agency.
  2. No interaction was found between outcome and conditions on the sense of agency.

Limitation & Reflection

  1. Lack of external validity
  2. The outcome of the study might mean minimal to them
  3. More than half of the participants do not believe that they are working with a partner
  4. The complexity of the experiment is a confounding variable
  5. The experiment is relatively complex in nature, hence it is rational to attribute control to the experiment than self.
  6. Future studies could look at the relationship between cyberbullying and a sense of agency
