Remove the crankset from the bottom bracket using the method shown on the article on How To Remove Bottom Bracket Assembly - Removing Bottom Bracket Assembly. Disconnect the crank arms using the method shown on How To Disconnect Crank Arms from Bottom Bracket Assembly. Note: It is very important to clean and thoroughly dry your crank arms and bottom bracket as thoroughly as possible. It is recommended that you invest in a chain cleaner and lubricant. The chain cleaner and lubricant are not 100% compatible with most bottom brackets; however, the combination will help you maintain your bottom bracket and chain. Consult your bike's owner's manual to determine what type of bottom bracket you are using. Note: If you are using a crank that has a drive side crank arm that is threaded and a non-drive side crank arm that is not threaded, then you will need to replace the non-drive side crank arm with a threaded crank arm (see details below). If you are using a chain ring that has a threaded hole, then you will need to replace the non-drive side crank arm with a threaded crank arm. Consult your bike's owner's manual to determine what type of threaded crank arm is compatible with your particular bike. To install a threaded crank arm, use a threaded bottom bracket spindle bolt and a suitable spindle wrench. Note: If your bottom bracket spindle bolt is hexagonal, you will need a hexagonal wrench. If your bottom bracket spindle bolt is square, you will need a flat-faced wrench (see the image below). Note: Use a full-size (6mm) chain tool. Position the threaded crank arm on top of the bottom bracket spindle bolt and snug it against the spindle bolt using the small wrench. Install the threaded bottom bracket spindle bolt. Note: Do not over-tighten the threaded bottom bracket spindle bolt; instead, tighten it firmly. Note: It is very important to clean and thoroughly dry your bottom bracket spindle bolt and crank arms as thoroughly as possible. Note: Consult your bike's owner's manual to determine what type of bottom bracket you are using. If you are using a chain ring that does not have a threaded hole, then you will need to remove the chain ring and install a threaded crank arm (see details below).
