Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2012) was the sequel to Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movie Sherlock Holmes (2009) and was directed by Ritchie. In this Sherlock Holmes film, the time is 1913 and the place is London. It was written by Michele Mulroney, who also wrote Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movie. There was a new threat to Sherlock and Watson’s existence in this story; a secret society of businessmen called the Arcane Brotherhood that Holmes and Watson were investigating. The new villain of the story was Moriarty (Guy Pearce) who was the head of the Arcane Brotherhood. A South African woman, Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), was also an associate of Moriarty. Her boyfriend, Daniel Reid, was the British police inspector who was in charge of Sherlock and Watson’s investigation. The young Maud-Sylvia Walsingham (Sophie Lowe) was in love with Daniel Reid but he had a girlfriend named Margot Lefferts (Iona Morris). Maud-Sylvia was a spy for the Germans. Her goal was to stop the Germans from invading England. She wanted to get in the way of this German invasion so that the British would get involved in war and be distracted from their own problems with the disease called Spanish Flu. Maud-Sylvia would cause death and destruction in the streets of London in order to cause a war. The story begins with two men who are enemies. The first is Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and the other is Henry Woolridge (Adrian Lester). They are both trying to prove that the other is a con artist and a liar. They are both British detectives. Holmes and Watson are trying to prove that Woolridge is a fraud. Their great friend, who is a doctor, is a friend of Moriarty. Sherlock and Watson also have to investigate a murder. Sherlock Holmes and Watson arrive in London from their travels and are staying at 221B Baker Street in London. Dr. Watson is a doctor and he is there with Sherlock Holmes. They are both there because they are the best detectives in London. A man named Charles Augustus Milverton (Mark Strong) is involved with the murder. In fact, he is the murderer. Milverton is a rogue detective. He is the con man.
