Volkswagen subsidiary Skoda has slowly built a loyal following in Australia.
Buyers are drawn to the thoughtful cabin design
Impressive driving style and value for money, even as inventory shortages have weighed on the brand this year.
There are only two models in the Karoq line
The $42,990 Karoq Style reviewed here and the $49,990 Sportline.
Those prices are roughly what a mid-size family SUV would cost.
The Karoq Style is a handsome SUV with sharp lines
Angular 18-inch alloy wheels, just the right amount of chrome trim and LED headlights and taillights.
There’s a central 8-inch touchscreen that’s compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
And there’s an excellent 10.25-inch fully digital instrument display. Other extras include a charging pad for wireless devices and two USB-C charging ports on the front.
However
Some features have been removed from the standard equipment list.
Skoda recommends buyers an optional package with sought-after luxury and technology features such as a larger 9.2-inch center screen, 360-degree camera, ambient lighting, leatherette upholstery and heated front and rear seats.
Be prepared to shell out nearly $11,000 for a fully loaded version.
Skoda offers a five-year/unlimited kilometer warranty on its vehicles
And you can buy a five-year $1550 package or a seven-year regular inspection package for $2400.
The padded seat is fully adjustable to provide a good driving position for drivers of all shapes and sizes.
The cabin is adorned with soft-touch materials and textured and patterned finishes
With few hard plastics to match.
The smooth
Flat-bottomed steering wheel is wrapped in synthetic leather and features easy-to-access buttons for controlling the infotainment and radar cruise functions.

Power comes from the familiar 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine
Sending 110kW and 250Nm to the front wheels.
The Karoq Style comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission for a smoother and more comfortable ride around town than the old dual-clutch transmission.
The turbocharged engine delivers plenty of low-end boost for nimble performance around town and easy overtaking on the highway.
The suspension exerts excellent body control in corners and is flatter through turns than most competitors. The clear and direct steering also contributes to driving pleasure.
Skoda claims a fuel consumption figure of 6.5L/100km for the Karoq
Which is very good, although more expensive premium unleaded petrol is required.
Drivers wanting more power should consider the Sportline variant
Which uses a more powerful 2.0-litre turbo unit producing 140kW and 320Nm, paired with a snappy seven-speed dual-clutch auto driving all four wheels.
It’s comfortable
Good looking, and a pleasure to drive, but the list of standard safety equipment is minimal.
The Subaru Forester 2.5i AWD starts around $42,600.
The dated-looking SUV isn’t all that sharp to drive
But comes with basic safety equipment and all-wheel drive as standard.
Toyota RAV4 GX Hybrid 2WD
About $41,000 drive away.
Fuel efficient
But with so little gear, you’ll have to wait at least a year to get your hands on one.
The Mazda CX-5 Maxx Sport 2WD
Drive-Away starts at about $43,600.
The good-looking SUV is fun to drive
But it’s showing its age inside the cabin.
