Bentley is famous for its British “old money” reputation for luxury that only the wealthiest could afford. However, the company has decided to grab the spotlight in the sport utility arena. The 2020 Bentley Bentayga Speed is the fastest SUV in the world with a top speed of 190 miles per hour. This even edges out the Lamborghini Urus, which was the previous holder of the record. The Bentayga held this record before in 2016 in the year of its debut. At that time it reached a top speed of 187 mph. Lamborghini decided to steal this title away by releasing its Urus that reached 190 mph. The Bentayga wins out by a mere 0.6 mph, but this requires some explanation. The reported top speed of the Urus is 305 kilometers per hour, but this only converts to 189.5 miles per hour. The Bentley SUV reports 306 km/h, which puts it slightly over 190 mph. Bentley is enthusiastically boasting about this title, but this is somewhat ironic because Lamborghini and Bentley are both owned by Volkswagen. The engine under the hood of this beast is a revised implementation of the 6.0-liter W12 that is found in other Bentley SUV models. The enhancements raise the horsepower to 626. The Urus produces 641 horsepower with its twin-turbo V-8. Other design factors that propel the Bentley include revised exhaust and suspension tweaks, plus it has a larger rear spoiler and 22-inch wheels. Sports enthusiasts can also opt for carbon-ceramic brakes, which are usually only seen on exotic sports cars. The supercar SUV niche looks like it could spark a lot of competition shortly, so it seems unlikely that Bentley will hold onto its record. Lamborghini is sure to up their game with the Urus. Ferrari and Aston Martin are also soon to release new SUV models that are sure to break the mold. Volkswagen Group has already announced their upcoming 680-hp Porsche Cayenne that is likely to challenge Bentley’s top speed. It seems like the 200 mph target that was once only achieved by the most extreme exotic sports cars is soon going to be reached by a sport utility vehicle. As for now, the people at Bentley can enjoy their temporary hold on the title of world’s fastest SUV. This article was originally published at RobertTaurosaAuto.com
